Railways minister to inaugurate ‘first green train corridor' on Sunday

NEW DELHI: Railways minister Suresh Prabhu will on Sunday inaugurate ‘first green train corridor’--114 km Rameswarm-Manamadurai track which will be free from human waste discharge from trains.
A zero toilet discharge section or green corridor envisages all trains passing on that particular route would have bio-toilets which eliminate open discharge of waste on the tracks which would help in improving cleanliness and hygiene.
To make the Rameswarm-Manamadurai corridor green, railways has ensured that 10 passenger trains consisting of 286 coaches moving over this section are provided with bio-toilets.
There are about 14 stations between Rameswaram and Manmadurai and about 16 passenger trains use the track in a day.
Aiming to contribute to ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ launched by Prime Minister, railways is working to provide human discharge free bio-toilets in all its coaches by September 2019.
Railways have already provided 40,750 bio-toilets in its coaches till June, 2016 and in the current financial year, it has planned to fit additional 30,000 bio-toilets.
In the coming days, Okha-Kanalas Junction(141 Kms), Porbandar-Wansjaliya (34 Kms) and Jammu-Katra(78 Kms) would also be taken up for making them free from human waste discharge from trains.
A railway official said these sections and stations were chosen, because the number of trains originating and terminating at these stations and sections are few, thus making it operationally easier and faster to make them human-discharge free.
